You have registered as a seller on Amazon.com, done the research, chosen the niche and even ordered or started to write a book. You are almost done picking a picture for the cover page and saved some dollars for editing and formatting on Fiverr. Now it is time to learn how to promote your book to receive reviews and purchases.

 

Step 1. Make your book free to collect feedback. Reviews are the most valuable currency on Amazon and you should do anything to get them. Start with “selling” your book for free. 3-7 days are enough, but you will have to promote it very intensely through additional sources during that time.

Step 2. Promote books on Facebook for collecting reviews.  Follow the groups listed below. It is important not only to make a post about your book in such groups but also to send some direct messages to active participants. Of course, it takes time, and you should be very careful not to send the same message to everyone, so change it a bit once a day. Don’t spread spam, choose people with interesting books and offer them to exchange real reviews. It is not a fraud if you download their books (for free) and browse them through. It might be also helpful for you, as you will have examples of design and structure.

 

 

Step 3. Add your free book offer on Producthunt.com. Use a “Books” subdivision. It will add up to 100 downloads and up to 5-6 reviews at least.

 

Step 4. Use “books giveaway” sites. Remember, your book will be free only for less than a week, and you better start getting ready to use those days to the full extent. Most of these websites require registration and filling in profile information before you can post your free book offer. Don’t wait, start registering right now and add pages to the bookmarks! By the way, later you can use these websites to sell a book at a bargain price as well.

 

 

Step 5. Close a free period, launch the sales. The pricing policy is up to you, but you should consider the following factors:

 

  1. The average cost of books in your category and subcategory;

  2. The average price of Amazon best sellers in the particular period;

  3. The royalty index. If your book is sold in the price range of  $0.99 - $2.98 you receive 25% royalty, starting from $2,99 - 70%. This range changes sometimes, but only for several cents. Of course, 70% sound better than 35%, but keep in mind, that it is more virtuous to sell more but for less money, than the reverse, because when you are selling intensely, your book stays on top and it generates even more purchases.

  4. Your goal. If you want to collect more reviews and make this book a platform for more books increasing your reputation as an author/seller, it is wise to price it within the $0,99 - $1,5 corridor.

It is important to understand that your first book might be a less success than you expected, and it is completely normal and is observed in more than 50% cases. It doesn’t necessarily mean you did something wrong, it means you need to analyze your strategy and the results and keep trying. Define the time it took you to return your investment and put your profit into several more books. As you will have a reputation already, your little “online book shop” will be indexed better, which will almost inevitably increase sales of the further books.
