Does loyalty exist in freelance academic writing?

It’s not a rhetorical question. It’s a matter that must be researched before discussed, and that’s what we decided to do: as usual we rely on the opinions of freelance academic writers because they are the most relevant source of information in such situations, so the facts and conclusions you’ll read further are fully based on their judgement.

So, in order to answer our main question, we need to find out why people, freelance academic writers in particular, migrate from one writing agency to another. What are they looking for? Are they too picky? Or there isn’t any decent writing company that can provide them with enough work?

Money Talks

What’s the most important factor when choosing a writing agency? “For me, it’s just who is going to pay me well” says Umair Rafiq, and we can’t argue with that. As we’ve found out earlier, non-native English writers prevail in the industry because academic writing is a good source of income for people whose government can’t provide them with decent jobs. However, writing agencies sometimes take advantage of the situation and apply fines, delay payments and dispute writers’ salaries to lower their own expenses. And that’s the main reason freelancers leave companies to search for better opportunities. So, can loyalty prosper in such conditions? We truly doubt.

Working Terms and Conditions

After the payment, the second most important factor of staying in a writing agency or leaving is working conditions. Obviously, the majority of writers doesn’t work in offices but complete the orders from home.  So, what conditions may there be? Deadlines, access to various sources for research, bonuses, task management systems, etc. There are many elements that actually belong within working conditions, and in case something is wrong with any of them, the writer already feels uncomfortable and doesn’t work that effectively. That’s why when there is some writing agency with better conditions hovering on the horizon, academic writers are ready to apply there.

“Online Is a Big Issue”

“I think loyalty is necessary everywhere in professional areas, but the problem in freelance academic writing is that the writers are always looking for the opportunities. If any agency gives them more money, they easily change the agencies. I think here "online" is a big issue because we are not connected with more emotional attachment with the agencies.” Keya Nahar has proposed a very justified explanation of writers’ migration from one writing agency to another. There are no colleagues to communicate with, no perks to use, no comfortable working place to get attached to. That’s why academic writers, like other freelancers, easily change employers.

Not Enough Orders

This is another reason of the fact that sometimes writers don’t just migrate, but work for two or more writing agencies. There can be all conditions necessary for comfortable working processes, but the lack of orders needed to earn enough money to provide for a family and cover all the expenses is the bottom line. Kagwina Franklin proves our point: “Some companies do not supply enough papers for the writers, who tend to be idle. When they get opportunities in other companies, they are willing to serve both companies.” And Oluwaseun Oloruntegbe adds “There are a few reasons why I write for different companies. One of the most important reasons is that I want a constant flow of orders.”

Professional Growth

Olive Olive says if writing agencies give writers a chance to improve their skills with the help of mentoring programs and regular feedback, freelancers tend to stick to them more loyally than to companies where nobody cares how you write. Why? Because they understand that writing agencies make some efforts and invest into the professional growth of their employees. It makes them feel valued and appreciated as well as they have good perspectives for the future.

From all the opinions of freelance academic writers and our conclusions we finally can answer the question whether loyalty exists in the industry or not. We can surely state that in most writing agencies there are no loyal employees who would stick to them even if they don’t like something. However, there are companies that try to develop their human resources management and implement different training programs, help their writers to complete orders and actually take interest in their well-being.

We assume that it’s not very easy to get hired by writing agencies that belong to the second category, but seek and you shall find! If you don’t try, you will never know what waits for you round the corner.
